The YDHR’s Successes, and Future Needs

The YDHR’s mandate is to preserve heritage rail equipment in operating order, and to promote rail heritage education. During our May to October operating season, our trains run weekly passenger trips between Uxbridge, and Stouffville, Ontario. The YDHR’s volunteers perform the time-consuming, skilled, and costly work involved. The YDHR has progressed rapidly from its humble beginnings as an idea with no assets, to the YDHR of today. We now have three locomotives, a baggage car, a caboose, and three passenger cars that have been restored by the YDHR.

The restoration of these pieces is ongoing, since equipment requires repair, and maintenance. Additionally, the YDHR has ongoing track repair costs, and we also have heritage equipment that is waiting to be restored. The YDHR has a small train museum in the Uxbridge station featuring artifacts that have been donated by members, and friends of the railway.

Our 15th anniversary is just the beginning! The YDHR has many plans going forward for further equipment preservation, and public education. While we have received a Trillium Grant that has allowed us to hire two part-time employees, our regular activities are funded by passenger fares, and donations.
